THE SANCTITY OF YOM KIPPUR

Yom Kippur begins with the recitation of Kol Nidre on Sunday night, September 24. As all Jews–no matter their level of observance–know, Yom Kippur is the most sacred day on the Jewish Calendar; the day marked from the beginning of creation for Jews to atone for their sins. The Torah commands us to afflict ourselves by not eating or drinking on this day. In addition, the Rabbis added four other restrictions: Not to wear leather shoes, not to bathe, not to engage in marital relations and not to self-anoint ourselves (with lotions, creams, etc.). The whole purpose of the High Holy Days–from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur–is to reflect on our lives and attempt to change for the better. It is written that Repentance, Prayer and Charity cancel any bad decrees. As for the latter, Charity, we welcome, and can definitely use, your donations. We always offer services and Yom Tov and Shabbos meals free of charge to all. Of course, we subsist on donations, so please contribute to our shul at Cruger Avenue Synagogue, 2222 Cruger Avenue, Bronx, NY 10467.

We pray all our blessed with the happiest and healthiest of New Years!
